The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will allow a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot - using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.
Assignment
1. Add a tab to your portfolio titled: RULE OF THIRDS
2. Photograph 18 images that represent a good sense of composition – focusing on the rule of thirds.
You will take 3 of each of the following;
horizontal rule of thirds
vertical rule of thirds
upper left point of power
upper right point of power
lower left point of power
lower right point of power
Think about the composition. Don’t take the photo just to “take the photo”.
3. Upload your pictures to your website. You may decide how you would like to display your images. This is your portfolio.
4. Highlight 5 of your best shots and type a critique or reflection statement about the photos you chose.
Grading: Each photo will be graded out of 5 on effort, composition, and subject matter.
